Mozilla Firefox OS Features

Firefox OS enables the Open Web as a platform for mobile devices. Mozilla Firefox OS is said to be just like any other OS which embeds in it all functionality of a smartphone. It can make calls, texts, calendar and contacts. It also manages the camera and runs apps, which sit on the screen in a normal grid of icons.

Gaia is the user interface of Firefox OS and controls everything drawn to screen. Gaia includes implementations of a lock screen, home screen, telephone dialer, text-messaging application, and camera app. Gaia is written entirely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It interfaces with the operating system through Open Web APIs, which are implemented by Gecko. Because it only uses standard web APIs it can work on other OSes and other web-browsers

It seems 2013 will be the year of innovations in terms of mobile operating systems at least. There are at least four new mobile platforms which will be making their foray into the smartphone market. Out of the four only Blackberry 10 seems to be the prominent name, but keep in mind, the other platforms have also managed to attract some eye-balls. Jolla’s Sailfish OS has actually attracted a lot many numbers and same can be said about the Samsung’s TIZEN platform.

Well I am  more than happy with these news, as it will give us an option to try new and innovative platforms.
