Blackberry World is official, RIM renames the App store
Blackberry World is now official. In order to streamline the release of Blackberry 10 on January 31, RIM has now renamed its App store or better known as Blackberry App World to just Blackberry World.
RIM has removed the word ‘app’ from its store and it’s now known as BlackBerry World reports TechCrunch. What this change signifies is that apart from apps, the store will also provide multimedia content like music and videos. This is the first steps in the series of the steps to the final announcement of the new Blackberry platform.
RIM mentioned this change was coming when it discussed the future of the store at the BlackBerry Jam Americas developer event in October, noting then that music and videos would be added to BAW (or BW as it’s now presumably known). RIM has reused its own conference branding for the new store name — but says the BlackBerry World conference will get a new (as yet undisclosed) name.
RIM has now hung the new sign above the door of its web store. Writing in a blog post, the company said the new branding will also be rolled out to the current range of BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook owners in the “coming weeks”.
It described the new BlackBerry World store as a “one-stop shop” for “mobile entertainment” but did not specify who would be providing the music and video content users will be able to download. RIM has previously said “music and video store access may by limited in some regions” — so it looks likely there will be regional supplier variation.
The company has also revamped its popular Blackberry Desktop software (its not official but sample images of the same have leaked) which now focuses more on the content and has even renamed it to – Blackberry Link. Though the company has not made the new desktop program official but we are assuming that they will soon do it as the imminent launch of the new platform reckons.
